چکیده

In a previous issue of the European Respiratory Journal STEVENS et al. [1] suggested that preschool children with wheeze account for a significant proportion of the UK healthcare budget. Most preschool wheezing is caused by viral infection and, therefore, we wondered how much preschool children with upper respiratory tract infection (URTI) without wheeze would cost the National Health Service? On average, a preschool child will catch 6–8 URTIs per year [2], and 11% of children v14 yrs will be taken to their family doctor when unwell. These figures may be higher in younger children [3]. If a child has six colds per year and is seen by a doctor for 11% of these infections, then, based on the 2.94 million UK preschool population estimate and a £16 consultation cost estimation [1], the primary care costs of viral URTI would be £31 million. This compares to the £34 million estimated by STEVENS et al. [1] as the cost of preschool wheezing. Therefore, the additional cost burden of wheeze seems small. We believe the villains are not wheeze and asthma but the respiratory viruses!

A physiological-social score for triaging of pandemic influenza patients.

In summary, argon deaeration decreases the concentration and the variability of exhaled breath condensate partial pressure of CO2, but there is always some remaining CO2 that may still be a confounding factor in pH assessment. CO2 content has a marked influence on exhaled breath condensate pH and, since exhaled breath condensate partial pressure of CO2 varies even after deaeration, it leaves so...

Design and evaluation of a device for collecting exhaled breath condensate.

In recent years, the analysis of exhaled breath condensate samples has been given great weight as a noninvasive methodology of studying physiology and lung diseases. The present study describes a device for measuring exhaled breath condensate that is affordable, easily constructed, portable and suitable for use in the field, as well as allowing the collection of simultaneous samples. The result...

Identification of acid reflux cough using serial assays of exhaled breath condensate pH

BACKGROUND Chronic cough is a common problem, frequently caused or exacerbated by acid reflux. Diagnosis of acid reflux cough is haphazard currently, often relying on long therapeutic trials of expensive medications. We tested the hypothesis that the most relevant mechanistic component of acid reflux in chronic cough is when it rises to the level of the airway where acid can potentially be aspi...

Identification of Intrinsic Airway Acidification in Pulmonary Tuberculosis.

Exhaled breath condensate acidification reflects the presence of airway acidification. Mycobacterium tuberculosis is an organism particularly sensitive to acidity. We aimed to determine if there is evidence of airway acidification in a cross section of patients with active tuberculosis. We enrolled 51 subjects with active tuberculosis in Ghana and Thailand, and compared them to control subjects....
